SSSO: How We Began
South Shore Swing Orchestra is the outgrowth of a summer music camp hosted in Hyde Park that drew participants from Calumet City, Englewood, Midway Airport, North Kenwood and Hyde Park. When the camp was completed, the student musicians decided they wanted to keep playing. Thus, SSSO is unique in its origin and governance:
- Conceived and administered by a Student Advisory Board (SAB)
- SAB consists of three students from Kenwood High School Academy
- SAB works closely with SSSO Music Director to plan and direct all aspects of
SSSO governance
SSSO Music Director jeannette Hoyt:
Creating positive learning environments through
music education
Jeannette Hoyt, SSSO Music Director, is presently Guest Strings Clinician at Shift Englewood Youth Orchestra, Director of the Palos Heights Chamber String Ensemble, and teaches over 40 private lesson string students through her studio, True Note Music, in the Lisle/Naperville area. Jeannette also serves as the Publicity Chair for Music Teachers of Hyde Park.
Jeannette attended Interlochen Arts Academy and Indiana University, Bloomington, majoring in music performance while studying jazz with Dave Baker. She has been associate principal violist with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and presently plays with Bella Vita String Quartet, Candy Town, and Synchronicity.
After a lifetime of music pedagogy experience, Jeannette can truly say that her chosen type of musical expression is ensemble performance and her favorite music to share is what the audience wants to hear and will enjoy.
Jeannette knows the strengths and weaknesses of a strictly classical musical education and brings that knowledge to her teaching, creating a learning environment where classical music discipline and idiomatic music genre self-discovery are equally valued and encouraged.
